WELCOME TO MITCHAM FELTERS
Creating beautiful textile art from wool fibre.
WHO WE ARE
WE ARE A GROUP OF TEXTILE ARTISTS INTERESTED PRIMARILY IN THE ART OF WET FELTING. WE PRACTICE A WIDE RANGE OF FELT MAKING TECHNIQUES TO PRODUCE BEAUTIFUL WEARABLE ART, WALL ART AND SCULPTURAL ART. WE INCORPORATE A RANGE OF ADDITIONAL MEDIA INTO OUR FELT ART. MANY OF OUR MEMBERS HAVE ADDITIONAL HIDDEN TALENTS AND SPREAD THEIR TEXTILE ART MORE BROADLY BEYOND WET FELTING.

How We Got Here

The Mitcham Felters group emerged some 15 years ago, after a group of women attended a number of workshops organised by Gallery One in Mitcham, South Australia. An enthusiastic response saw them continue to meet regularly to learn from one another and to share artistic ideas and techniques. This collaborative approach to expanding our knowledge and skills is a defining ethos of the group. Over the years the membership has evolved and we currently have about 20 members in our original group. To accommodate everyone who wishes to learn about this interesting art form our numbers have grown and we now have groups meeting on each Saturday of the month. Please follow our blog at the top of the homepage to see updates on our activities.

WILD IMAGININGS
In the play of colour, fibre, and other materials our felt artists are challenged to create beautiful artworks while allowing our imaginations to run wild. Many of our works are inspired by the wildness of nature. Some even incorporate elements of nature into their very fabric. Other works are inspired by imaginative fantasy and wild ideas. We have works inspired by dreams and by the wildness of unrestrained colour. Other sculptural works play with structure and colour to produce interesting forms rather than seeking for practical utility. The final products of our art are often unexpected. It is not a precise art form. Things do not always behave as we expect. But the process can always be relied upon to result in something special. For feltmakers there is an often-used adage that “there are no mistakes in felting - just happy accidents”, and we find a way to reimagine our final outcome.
OUR CREATIONS
At Mitcham Felters, we love having the opportunity to mentor artists and to help them succeed. Mitcham Felters wants to differentiate you from the rest, and help you stand out like the star you truly are. We’re proud of everything we do and the work our members have created, and invite you to take a look for yourself.
